Japanese Literature – If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura
Have you ever imagined if cats disappeared from the world? Some may be exhilarated as they hate cats. Some may be disappointed as they are cat lovers (like me, ha-ha!). This adventure story tells us about a patient, who suffered from brain cancer. See if the story can resonate with you!
I see a doctor. He tells me that I can only survive for six months. One day, I meet a devil. Do you know what a devil looks like? Some believe that a devil resembles ones shown in cartoons. A devil should carry a trident. Also, there are horns on its head. This devil is a lot like “me”. If people can see it, they will consider “me” and the devil are twins.
I am asked to choose something to disappear forever to extend my life for one day. In other words, I have to give up something. You may think that the devil can help me erase garbage in my home so I don’t have to do a lot of housework. In fact, I can only choose the most important thing in my life. The devil tells me that I just have seven days to survive. If I cannot tell him I will die immediately. Initially, I opt for chocolate because I always eat it. I don’t care if it disappears from my life. But when the devil eats my chocolate, it thinks chocolates mustn’t disappear as it is the most delicious human food it has ever eaten in the world.
The devil suggests the phone should disappear. Well… I don’t care about it. In the past, my ex-girlfriend did not like using phones as she was living in a village. She usually phoned me by using public telephones. I accept the devil’s suggestion. The devil allows me to phone the most important person in my life as I cannot use my phone anymore afterwards. The next day, there is no phone in the world anymore. I dated my ex-girlfriend and told her about the devil. I realize that people are more relaxed when they don’t hold their phones. Most are reading books or sleeping. I realize that we can survive without a phone.
On the second day, I choose films. What if films disappeared in the world? I am allowed to watch the last movie in my life. I, ask my best friend to recommend a film and tell him that I will die soon. He thinks and gives me a USB. However, there is nothing when I play the film. In fact, I can only see a blank screen. I recall my childhood and my cat Cabbage (高麗菜).
On the third day, the devil thinks I am poor as I have lost significant things already. The devil lets my cat speak human language. I am a bit surprised since I can understand what Cabbage is saying. Today, I choose a clock to disappear. The clock is very prominent in our world. People do most things according to clocks. If clocks disappear people may do things endlessly.
I take Cabbage to the park. The park reminds me of my mum who has passed away. I look at my family photo. Cabbage is in the photo. Cabbage doesn’t remember much about my mum. Frankly, it nearly forgets mum.
The evil chooses my cat to disappear. I refuse. Cabbage builds a better relationship with me and my family. What should I do? I know, I will die. I miss my cat!
After a week, I see my cat meow. Am I in heaven?
If you are undoubtedly a cat lover, read this book to find out more! You can buy it on Amazon or in the school library! There is also a film version! The film is touching. I burst into tears when I read the whole story!
