Five Things I’ve Missed Most During Class Suspension

Five Things I’ve Missed Most During Class Suspension

April 23, 2020 Mimi Wong Comments 1 comment

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, schools have already been suspended since the end of the Chinese New Year holidays. Here are five things I have missed the most. See if you agree with me.

  1. Friends

Friends are very vital. I want to talk to them face-to-face. Every time I go to school, I can have lunch and play with them. We can share a lot and gain support from each other. Before the outbreak, I just took studying with my friends for granted. Well… I won’t think that way now because I have not met them for several months. While some suggest that we can communicate with friends via social media. To me, it would be just like talking to a robot. I really want to see the familiar faces in real life.

  1. School

Before the outbreak, I always had to wake up early for school. It was a bit tiring. I wished I could study at home. During the pandemic, I have to study at home. Learning at home is undoubtedly stressful. Imagine your home becoming your school; that was weird. I don’t have the motivation to study actually. There are a lot of distractions such as my phone. It is far harder to concentrate on revision at home. Oh! I really miss the self-study room at school!

  1. Teachers

Teachers use Zoom to have lessons with us. When I use the computer for lessons, there are fewer interactions. Teachers are like speaking robots behind the screen, and I am the one sitting in front of it. Recalling the past, I could see many interesting interactions between us and teachers in class. All such wonderful scenes have now all gone…

  1. Fresh air

When I go to school, I want to take off my mask and breathe in some fresh air. However, masks are like my only clothes. I cannot take them off in order to prevent getting COVID-19. When I walk on the street, I feel uncomfortable to breathe because of the coronavirus. I have realised that days without masks are precious.

  1. Libraries

Borrowing books these days is not easy thanks to the closure of public libraries. I remember that public libraries were opened for a week. Then they were closed again owing to the increasing number of cases of COVID-19. I went to the library that week and waited for the librarians to distribute tickets. Have you ever imagined that you had to get a ticket to enter a library? That’s unreal! Well… they have been closed again. I miss them since I want to return some books.

I hope everything will be back to normal one day.

I Thought—

I Thought—

April 2, 2020 Chelsea Comments 3 comments

I thought I had it because I opened it again,

turned out you lost it, and I was in pain.

I thought the words meant because they were deep,

turned out they were just lies, and I was ripped.

I thought we were the light because we shone so bright,

turned out it was just a night, and I was here to write.

I thought, I thought it would not hurt like this,

I thought I was going to be okay,

I thought the ocean would not be in my eyes,

and I thought you were the one.

The sun is gonna rise tomorrow, and I am gonna sink in the sorrow.

They say growth is painful because it’s truthful.

It’s sad, but It’s true, you broke my heart, really hard.

I thought—

I thought you opened my eyes, but you opened my eyes, anyway.

And I guess, I’m gonna close it again.

Emma Goodwitt’s Casual Note: The Pathetic Childhood of Ian Blake (Part 1)

Emma Goodwitt’s Casual Note: The Pathetic Childhood of Ian Blake (Part 1)

April 1, 2020 6A FONG KA YING Comments 1 comment

Author’s warning! this passage contains bloody and mentally disturbing plots. Think twice before you read. Every setting that seems problematic has a reason related to the main storyline. Grammatical mistakes may appear for reasons. Informal modal particles and punctuation are used in dialogues.

An anonymous note, written in the third person, was found in the 1980 Blake family file inside the Maghuting Police Force Headquarters. The handwriting was kind of messy cursive. The following shows the original content of the note:

In the early morning of 31st October, a young couple named Blake, living in a rural laboratory, were carrying out medical tests. Their nine-year-old eldest son, Ian Blake, had just left the bathroom when coming across the main laboratory. He heard someone speaking inside. Ian stopped outside the laboratory and was curious why his parents were up so early. Every day, they’d been working until midnight since they started that project. How can they survive long periods without getting any sleep? And actually, what are they up to? He really hoped that he could get into the lab one day.

Curiously Ian stuck his ear on the paper birch door of the laboratory and tried to listen to the dialogue between his parents. A while later, his mother’s voice was heard first, ‘Humph, when is this experiment going to end, sweetheart? I’ve been standing for like three hours. I cannot feel my legs anymore.’ Then his father replied, ‘Me too. But as chief operators, keeping an eye on the experiment process is our mission and responsibility. We must persevere! Hmm…C’me here, Diana.’ This is the first time Ian had heard his parents speaking this gently since he could remember. He felt like there was something intriguing going on behind the doors thus, he continued listening.

‘Aw~ you pervert! Wait!’

‘Didn’t you just say that you couldn’t feel your legs? Then how can you finish the experiment well when you are running out of stamina? You see, I’m helping you with it… ha!’ ‘Not before the experiment is over. We’re still gonna observe the chemical change!’

‘You’re kinda right…I will save some potential energy for you then…’

‘Ah, watch out for the foetus inside me… aw… gentler…’ The dialogue had come to an end. It was followed by discrete sounds of kissing.

Hearing the noise produced by his parents, Ian seemed to be struck mentally. He whispered to himself, ‘Better to be neglected.’ And he headed to the bathroom through the pitch dark corridor.
After he dealt with this physiological trauma, he turned back to his room to continue with his sleep. Just then, the air unexpectedly turned cold. He wondered, rubbing his hands, trying to produce heat, ‘Oooh… why is it getting so cold all of a sudden? Never mind, never mind, just pop back to my room ASAP.’

Just as Ian sped up in the dark, he suddenly sensed himself hitting something with his head. He reckoned it was a wall, so he stepped back and turned ninety degrees to the right in order to keep walking. He couldn’t imagine that he would run into another obstacle—now this is the true wall. Then what was the first thing that he hit? He turned around and found a small box of matches inside his pants. One was taken out, ignited, and held in front of his eyes…

With a quanta of blaze in the dark, an oddly enormous figure facing him came into his sight. That figure seemed to carry a massive grudge and shouted to Ian, ‘GIVE IT BACK! GIVE IT BACK! GIVE—IT—BACK—TO—ME!’

‘AH—’ Ian felt like his heart was about to stop but he soon realized that he should not make disturbing noises in the middle of the night. Therefore, he covered his mouth with the other hand immediately before he was about to lose control of his mouth. Right after that, he constrained his fear which was almost at bursting point and anxiously asked that figure with his eyes shut, ‘Wh— Wh—Who on the world are you? I—I don’t think I can recognize y—you and… I didn’t ow—owe you anything.’ That figure sneered, ‘Ha, look what your bloody parents have done. Once, my lovely daughter, my clever husband, we all lived peacefully together as normal human beings. Now you tell me, why were they sacrificed for the experiments of your cruel parents, even though there is no rivalry relationship between our two families? Huh?’

Ten Christmas Gift Recommendations

Ten Christmas Gift Recommendations

December 23, 2019 Mimi Wong Comments 0 Comment

Worrying about gift exchanges at Christmas parties? If you are feeling desperate, perhaps the following recommendations can help you!

  1. Stationery set

Stationery sets are a must for everyone to deal with signing, writing, drawing, etc. If your friends want something useful, a stationery set is perfect. You can prepare a stationery set for a gift exchange. A stationery set usually involves pens, an eraser, pencils, a correction tape and a ruler. If there is a notebook in your stationery set, it will be even better, especially for somebody who loves writing a diary or jotting notes.

Budget: $30-$50 (depending on the price of stationery)

  1. Music box

Listening to the song on a music box gives you a feeling of warmth, especially in winter. Most music boxes contain some enthralling songs. It can help the receiver remember you when they listen to the song on the music box.

Budget: $50-$200 (depending on the size )

  1. Dolls

Dolls are for girls. If you attend a Christmas party in which all the participants are girls, dolls are suitable indeed. Girls like some cute dolls, particularly animal dolls such as Shiba Inu dog dolls and cat dolls. The gift receiver will be really excited if they obtain a doll as a gift.

Budget: $50-$200 (depending on the size)

  1. Board game set

If you want your gift to stand out from others, a boardgame set is the right choice. Some board games can be played with others so as to share happiness. It is undeniable that playing board games can help us get to know more about communication and personalities. Why not consider buying a set of board game for your friends?

Budget: $150-$1000 or above (depending on the brand)

  1. Hot chocolate mug

Nothing is warmer than drinking from a hot chocolate mug in winter. I haven’t seen one who has given a cup of hot chocolate to others. But if you can make a mug of hot chocolate for others, they must be surprised! If you want the mug to be very adorable, you can buy one from amazon.com. There are numerous types of mugs. The receiver can not only enjoy hot chocolate but also keep the special mug.

Budget: $60-$300 (depending on the design)

  1. Books

If you have books that you have read, you can think about giving them to others. Some books such as Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens are very meaningful and inspiring. Knowledge is more important than money. Reading books can make you realize that nothing is more important than love. At this Christmas, you can try giving books to others in order to share the joy of reading.

Budget: /

  1. Hand-made scarf

A scarf is one of the necessities in winter. If you can knit a scarf as a present, the receiver will be much grateful and appreciate you more. If you don’t know how to knit one, you can search for some videos online to learn it. It is worth spending time knitting a scarf as knitting is an act of love and care.

Budget:$30-$50

  1. Crystal ball

A crystal ball is relaxing when you shake it. I usually shake it when I feel nervous. Imagine that all stress was inside the ball. Then shake it. Your stress would be reduced immediately. It is an excellent present for others who are stressed.

  1. Scratch-world map

Many people like travelling around the world nowadays. Having a scratch-world map can help others who want to go to all the countries. After visiting a country, they can scratch the part out on the map to reveal the coloured region underneath. After a year, maybe there are many parts exposed. You can buy one from amazon.com for gift exchanges.

Budget: $150-$400

  1. Cookies

If you like cooking, you can make some cookies for gift exchanges. Gingerbread is well-known at Christmas. Making some gingerbread for gift exchanges is a great idea as it is palatable. People can eat it when they are hungry.

Budget: $40

In conclusion, there are many choices for gift exchanges! As Christmas is coming very soon, I wish you guys a merry Christmas!

have your head in the clouds

to have ideas, plans, etc. that are not realistic
有不切實際的想法;離地

  • The leader clearly had his head in the clouds to propose such a terrible plan. He should learn to be down-to-earth by listening to the voices of people.
    那個領䄂提出一個如此糟糕的計劃,真是很離地。他應聆聽民意,學習如何去貼地。
Ten Interesting Facts Found in Psychology

Ten Interesting Facts Found in Psychology

November 30, 2019 Mimi Wong Comments 2 comments

During my last summer vacation, I participated in a course called ‘Psychology and Personal Growth’ which was organised by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Here are ten interesting facts that I would like to share. If you want to know more about psychology, this article is definitely suitable for you.

  1. What is psychology? What does it study?
Some students who don’t know about psychology may assume that it is a subject about reading people’s mind. The fact is psychology is a study which concentrates on human behaviour and mental health.
  2. How is a psychological test conducted?
The human brain has a lot of preconceptions which need to be taken into consideration before psychological experiments. Psychologists usually conduct experiments by naturalistic observations, case study (interviews, questionnaires, psychological tests) and double-blind studies (experiments in which neither the subjects nor the researchers know who has been given the active treatment or drug and who has not). These ways can help avoid some social desirability bias (the tendency for people to respond in a socially desirable way) so experiments can be convincing.
  3. Where does stress come from?
Psychologists believe that stress comes from various sources. Apart from working and schooling, some life changes and other special sources can make you anxious. Negative life changes such as losing a job, dropping out of school are stressful. Acculturative stress such as racism and discrimination can be worrisome for ethnic minorities as they will find it hard to find jobs.
  4. How do psychologists define conflict in a human’s brain?
There are three types of conflict: approach-to-approach conflict, avoidance-avoidance conflict, multiple approach-avoidance conflict.Approach-approach conflict: two positive goals that you want to achieve, but you can only attain one. For example, your pocket money can only afford a smartphone, but you want to buy a Samsung and Apple.Avoidance-avoidance conflict: two negative goals that you don’t want to achieve but you have to do. For instance, cleaning the toilet or bathing a dog. These two things are time-consuming and you don’t want to do.

Multiple approach-avoidance conflict: contain both positive and negative goals. For example, you want to do revision but there are many things which are tempting and preventing you from revising such as playing computer games, browsing social media.

  5. What are Type A and Type B personalities?
Psychologists divide people personalities into two main groups: Type A and Type B people. Type A people are usually creating stress. They are mainly aggressive. Some of them are perfectionists. Type B people focus more on quality of life. They strike a balance between working and relaxing.
  6. What do psychologists think about eating disorders?
They think that the cause of an eating disorder is perfectionism. Some people are discriminated thanks to obesity. Society pressure means they want to have an ideal look. As a result, some people take on severe dieting to keep their attractive body shape. However, they can easily suffer from two diseases: Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.Anorexia Nervosa: An eating disorder characterised by the maintenance of abnormally low body weight, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image with a lack of menstruation.Bulimia Nervosa: An eating disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by purging and by persistent overconcern with body shape and weight.
  7. Why do psychologists believe that women live longer than men?
Because men are more likely to die from acts of violence, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. Also, men lack attention to their health. On the contrary, women are more willing to seek health care.
  8. How do psychologists perceive names?
They perceive that some names (especially girls) such as Jennifer, Kathy and Christine are more attractive than names Gertrude, Ethel and Harriet. Moreover, some unusual or odd names are less popular. Women with masculine names such as Rean or Randy are less anxious, more culturally sophisticated. Furthermore, they have greater leadership potential than feminine nicknames. Believe it or not!
  9. What psychologists think about a love relationship?
Psychologists created ABCDE models of relationship which refers to Attraction, Building, Continuation, Deteriorating, and Ending to depict a love relationship. Intimacy can be built through self-disclosure.
  10. What happens if you don’t get enough sleep?
Psychologists think that inadequate sleep can reduce cognitive ability. Also, there are more vehicle crashes, cardiovascular diseases and psychological disorders. Lack of sleep can lower mental alertness and concentration.

The above facts are based on some psychological researches. Psychological researches can only be references for you. Perhaps there are some mistakes in the experiments, so results may have some errors. The above facts are based on a university reference book. You can borrow some psychological books in the library so as to learn more!
